About The Auction
Scotland is a country where water comes in great abundance. Most obviously for whisky, the rains that fall on the mountains and chatter through the glens are a crucial component of the drink. Beyond this, water forms a part of the backdrop in which the distilleries are situated. Many Scottish distilleries are located near the coast; built with views on vast stretches of sea, calm bays and estuaries, fast flowing gulfs of treacherous water between islands. Through their individual histories, distilleries have been at the heart of smaller fishing communities, or found themselves amid the bustle of shipping ports. Growing their business in places like these has informed the character of such distilleries, and leads us to describe certain whiskies as ‘Maritime Malts’; drams which crystallise the culture of their coastal homes.
In this first Cask 88 auction, we are delighted to offer a collection of casks of exceptionally fine single malt whisky from several maritime distilleries. These malts can leave a lasting impression and may inspire you to throw caution to the wind, defy parental wishes and put out to sea on the next boat leaving port, never to return.
